About me

Katie Merritt

Integrative Psychotherapist | MA, PGDip, MBACP | Creative & Embodied Practice

The Self Room was created as a space for depth, care and authenticity.

I set it up in response to a growing sense that many people are asked to adapt, perform or rush towards solutions, rather than being met with curiosity and time. The Self Room offers a quieter, more thoughtful approach, a place where you can arrive as you are and be supported to explore what feels complex, stuck or unspoken.

My work here is rooted in the belief that meaningful change happens through relationship, attunement and safety. Therapy at The Self Room is not about fixing or labelling, but about creating space to listen closely to yourself, reconnect with your inner world and make sense of your experience at your own pace.

I am an integrative psychotherapist (MA, PGDip, MBACP) with a multidisciplinary creative background that shapes how I work. My therapeutic practice is grounded in depth, relationship and embodiment, and informed by many years in the arts.

I originally trained in theatre arts at Middlesex University (BA) and at the performance conservatoire East 15 Acting School (MFA), going on to work across London as a theatre director, Artistic Director and examiner. These years developed my sensitivity to emotional rhythm, metaphor and the careful holding of stories, skills that now sit at the core of my psychotherapy practice.

I hold a Postgraduate Diploma (Level 7) in Counselling and Psychotherapy, completed with Distinction, on a GSRD-accredited training programme, and I am a registered member of the BACP (MBACP). Alongside my practice, I work as a LAMDA Examiner and teach at St Paul’s Girls’ School, supporting young people in confidence, communication and embodied self-expression. In 2023, I co-created Queer Spaces, a community-rooted initiative offering therapist training, EDI workshops, and creative programmes for universities, organisations, and the wider public, work that continues to inform my approach to therapy.

In my practice, I integrate psychodynamic and person-centred approaches through a relational, creative and embodied lens, working with metaphor, rhythm, the felt sense, and what can be hard to put into words. My work is GSRD-informed, queer- and kink-affirming, focused on creating spaces where clients can explore, express, heal, and reconnect with themselves at their own pace.
